After roughly 315 different GBA games, Yu-Gi-Oh! finally has some competition in the lucrative "collectible card game featuring a spiky-haired kid" field. And, if you thought it was just blondes that had fun, think again. Atari's Duel Masters: Sempai Legends introduces the handheld crowd to Shobu Kirifuda -- the black-and-white-haired star of the Duel Mastersworld. For fans of the cartoon series and card game, this duel-driven RPG lets you live the life of a real Duel Masters duelist. For everyone else, it's an introduction to yet another game that'll eventually have you plunking down some serious coin for an ultra-rare card on eBay.
If you're already familiar with the rules of the card game -- or of similar games -- you'll have a head start over a first-timer. The game's manual and in-game tutorials do a surprisingly good job of explaining the basics of the game, but only by playing -- and losing a lot at first -- will the somewhat muddy rules and strategies start to become clearer. You start with a deck made up of 40 cards based on five different "civilizations" -- nature, light, water, darkness, and fire.
Yikes! More than 20 bits of info on this screen. Each civilization has different plusses and minuses, so just by choosing one over another you've already established some sort of strategy. The goal of the duel is to break your opponent's five shields before he can break yours. Your shields are represented by the first five cards off the top of your deck at the start of the duel, so if you're incredibly unlucky, a bunch of your best cards could wind up becoming these unplayable shields.
I'm not going to go into insane detail about the rules of the card game, because -- well -- I'm not getting paid by the word. Suffice it to say, you could spend a while just tinkering with the make-up of your deck and pondering the nuances of dueling. Thankfully, at least for the time being, you'll only have to consider the relative merits of 180 different creature cards.
The game features the 120 cards in the base set and an additional 60 from the "Evo-Crushinators of Doom" booster set. (Maybe it's just me, but doesn't the "of Doom" part come across as overkill?) With 60 more cards appearing in each of the upcoming "Rampage of the Super Warriors" and "Shadowclash of Blinding Light" sets, the next DM cart -- and you can bet your "Japanese Super Bolshak Dragon" there'll be one -- will present even more deck-building dilemmas.
